Dear Church,
John’s words are as needed now as they were when first written:
“This is the message we have heard from Him and announce to you, that God is Light, and in Him there is no darkness at all.” (1 John 1:5)
Everything that follows is built on that truth. God is light. He is pure, holy, righteous, and true. There is no contradiction in Him, no stain in Him, no moral darkness in Him. If we desire fellowship with God, then we must take seriously what it means to walk in the light as He Himself is in the light.
In this short paragraph, John exposes three problems that can plague the people of God, and he gives three principles that must guide our hearts.
Three Problems
1. The Problem of Empty Profession
“If we say that we have fellowship with Him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth.” (v.6)
It is possible to claim fellowship with God while living in rebellion to Him. Words can be sound while life is disobedient. A person may say the right things, attend the right assemblies, and wear the name of Christ, yet still walk in darkness through unrepentant sin, dishonesty, bitterness, impurity, or stubborn self-will.
John does not soften the language. He says such a claim is false. God is not interested in profession without practice.
The church must remember that Christianity is more than what we say. It is how we live before God when no one else is watching.
2. The Problem of Self-Deception
“If we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us.” (v.8)
Another danger is not open rebellion, but denial. Pride can convince us that we are doing fine, that we have no real struggle, no need for correction, no sins needing confession, no areas needing growth.
Self-deception is especially dangerous because the person trapped in it often feels secure. They compare themselves with others, excuse their attitudes, minimize their words, and overlook their own failures.
A church grows weak when humility disappears. We cannot be healed from what we refuse to acknowledge.
3. The Problem of Calling God Wrong
“If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar and His word is not in us.” (v.10)
This is the most serious progression of all. It moves beyond deceiving ourselves to contradicting God Himself. God says all have sinned. God says we need grace. God says we need cleansing. To deny our guilt is to reject His testimony.
Whenever people rewrite sin, excuse sin, redefine sin, or deny sin, they are not merely disagreeing with men. They are opposing the word of God.
The church must never become so shaped by culture that it loses the ability to blush over what God condemns.
Three Principles
1. Walk Honestly Before God
“But if we walk in the light as He Himself is in the light…” (v.7)
Walking in the light does not mean sinless perfection. It means living openly, sincerely, and submissively before God. It means wanting truth more than image. It means bringing our lives under His standard rather than adjusting His standard to fit our lives.
To walk in the light is to pursue what pleases God, to turn when corrected, and to keep moving toward Him.
This is the direction of a faithful life.
2. Live in Fellowship With One Another
“…we have fellowship with one another…” (v.7)
When believers walk in the light, genuine fellowship follows. Light produces unity because honesty, humility, repentance, and love create strong relationships.
Many speak of fellowship as mere social connection, but biblical fellowship is deeper than shared meals and friendly conversation. It is shared life in Christ. It is people helping one another toward heaven. It is truth joined with love.
A church walking in the light will not be perfect, but it will be real.
3. Trust the Cleansing of Christ and Practice Confession
“…and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin.” (v.7)
“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” (v.9)
Here is the hope of the passage. Our confidence is not in flawless performance, but in the faithful Savior. Those who walk in the light are not those who never fail. They are those who do not hide when they fail. They confess, repent, and trust the blood of Jesus.
Confession is not weakness. It is spiritual honesty. Repentance is not defeat. It is the road back to joy. Grace is not permission to sin. It is the provision for those who hate sin and want to be free from it.
A Final Appeal
Dear church, let us reject empty profession, resist self-deception, and never deny what God has spoken. Let us walk in the light, honestly, humbly, together, confessing our sins, and trusting the cleansing blood of Jesus Christ. God is light, so let us be a people who no longer love the shadows.
