Teach Me Lord, to Live at Peace
Peace is something nearly everyone desires, yet it often seems difficult to find. We live in a world filled with conflict, misunderstanding, and division. Even among God’s people, disagreements can arise. While we cannot control the attitudes or actions of others, we are responsible for the spirit we bring into every relationship.
The apostle Paul wrote, “If possible, so far as it depends on you, be at peace with all men” (Romans 12:18). Notice that God does not place upon us the impossible burden of controlling another person’s heart. Instead, He calls us to examine our own. Have I spoken with kindness? Have I acted with humility? Have I sought reconciliation? Have I refused to repay evil for evil? Living at peace begins with a heart that is surrendered to God.
Scripture never teaches that peace comes by compromising truth. Jesus is the Prince of Peace, yet He also declared the truth without hesitation. There were times when His teaching divided those who heard Him because some refused to believe. Biblical peace is not purchased by silence, fear, or surrendering conviction. Rather, it is found when truth is spoken in love and our conduct reflects the character of Christ.
There will be times when others choose conflict despite our best efforts. Some hearts simply do not desire peace. Even then, we must guard against bitterness, resentment, and the temptation to return evil for evil. Our responsibility is not to force peace where it is rejected, but to faithfully pursue it wherever it is possible.
Perhaps there is someone in your life with whom peace has been broken. Ask yourself honestly, “Have I done everything within God’s will to pursue peace?” If the answer is yes, entrust the matter to the Lord. If the answer is no, ask Him for the courage to take the next faithful step. Whether reconciliation comes or not, we can live with a clear conscience knowing that we have sought to honor God.
So let this be our prayer today: “Teach me, Lord, to live at peace.” Help me to love without compromise, to speak truth with gentleness, to forgive freely, and to pursue peace whenever it depends on me.
May God continue to teach us, shape us, and make us more like His Son.
